Which picture is this shape turned round?

Show the answer

Picture C is the shape turned half way round. All the others are mirror images.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Choosing a flipped shape, because all its parts look right. The parts are the same, but they're in mirror order. A turned shape must not be flipped.

Try it at home

Cut a flag shape from paper. Turn it on the table, then flip it over. Can you ever turn the flipped one to match?

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! Turning a shape and flipping a shape can look similar, but they're not the same. Today you'll learn how to tell them apart.

Here's a flag. Watch it turn. Now it's on its side, but it's still the same flag. You could make this just by turning the paper.

Now watch this flag flip over. It's a mirror image. Let's turn it, and see if it ever matches the first flag. It never does. However far you turn a mirror image, it stays a mirror image.

Here's how to check. Turn each choice in your head until the pole stands upright. Then see which way the flag points. This one points right, like the first flag, so it's a turn. This one points left, so it's been flipped.

Let's try one together. Which picture is this shape turned round? Here's a tip: turn each one in your head. Say it out loud!

The answer is picture A! The others have been flipped, so no amount of turning can make them.
