In this lesson
- Every point moves straight across the mirror.
- With a standing mirror, left and right swap.
- With a flat mirror, top and bottom swap.
- Check the part nearest to the mirror.
Your turn
The mirror is underneath the shape. Which picture is the reflection?
Show the answer
The answer is picture C! The top and the bottom have swapped, and left and right have stayed the same.
The common mistake
Here's a common mistake. Sliding the shape across, without flipping it. A slide keeps the shape facing the same way. A reflection makes it face the other way.
Try it at home
Stand a small mirror on a drawing. Before you look, guess what the reflection will be, then check.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! In a reflection puzzle, you get a shape and a mirror line. Your job is to find what the shape looks like in the mirror.
Here's a shape, and a mirror line that stands up straight. Every point moves straight across the line. It ends up the same distance away, on the other side. So left and right swap, but the top stays at the top.
A mirror line can lie flat too. Now the top and the bottom swap. Left and right stay where they are.
Here's how to check. Find the part nearest to the mirror. In the reflection, it must be nearest to the mirror too.
Let's try one together. The mirror is on the right. Which picture is the reflection? Here's a tip: look at the part nearest to the mirror. Say it out loud!
The answer is picture A! Left and right have swapped, and the top is still at the top.
Here's a common mistake. Sliding the shape across, without flipping it. A slide keeps the shape facing the same way. A reflection makes it face the other way.
Your turn! The mirror is underneath the shape. Which picture is the reflection? Pick the right card. You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! The answer is picture C! The top and the bottom have swapped, and left and right have stayed the same.
Quick review. Every point moves straight across the mirror. With a standing mirror, left and right swap. With a flat mirror, top and bottom swap. Check the part nearest to the mirror. See you next time!
