Picture codes

11+Chapter 1 · Lesson 6

Your turn

What's the code for the new picture?

Show the answer

The square inside means D. The triangle means Y. The code is DY.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Guessing what a letter means from one picture. One picture has lots of features, so it can't tell you which one the letter stands for. Compare two pictures that share the letter.

Try it at home

Make up your own picture code: one letter for colour, one for shape. Draw three pictures with codes, and ask someone to code a new one.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! In a code question, each picture has letters beside it. Each letter stands for one thing about the picture. You work out what each letter means, then find the code for a new picture.

Here are three pictures and their codes. Look at the first letter. The two pictures with A are both squares. The picture with B is a circle. So the first letter tells you the shape. Now look at the second letter. X is white, and Y is grey. So the second letter tells you the shading.

Now here's a new picture. It's a circle, so the first letter is B. It's grey, so the second letter is Y. The code is BY.

Watch out, because the first letter won't always be the shape. Here, the two pictures with P are both grey, and their shapes are different. So here, the first letter tells you the shading.

Let's try one together. What's the code for the new picture? Here's a tip: compare two pictures that share a letter. Say it out loud!

The answer is BY! B is a square, and Y is small.

Here's a common mistake. Guessing what a letter means from one picture. One picture has lots of features, so it can't tell you which one the letter stands for. Compare two pictures that share the letter.

Your turn! What's the code for the new picture? Pick the right card. You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! The square inside means D. The triangle means Y. The code is DY.

Quick review. Compare two pictures that share a letter. Say what that letter stands for. Do the same for each letter. Then build the code for the new picture. See you next time!
