Practise
Ten new questions every time. Answer them all, then check: you get your score, and the working for anything you missed.
In this lesson
- Follow one thing at a time.
- Some things change by a step, and some swap back and forth.
- Check everything that changes.
- Then pick the choice that fits it all.
Your turn
Which picture goes in the gap?
Show the answer
There's one more dot each time, so the gap has five dots. The shading takes turns, so the gap is grey. The answer is picture C!
The common mistake
Here's a common mistake. Following one thing, and then stopping. A wrong choice is often right about the arrow, but wrong about the shading. So check everything that changes before you choose.
Try it at home
Make a pattern with coins or buttons, changing one thing each time. Leave a gap, and ask someone what goes there.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! In a series, the pictures follow a pattern, and one picture is missing. Your job is to work out which picture goes in the gap.
Here's the trick. Don't try to watch everything at once. Follow one thing at a time, from picture to picture. Then check that it works every time.
Some things change by the same step each time. Follow the dots: one, two, three, four. There's one more dot each time. So the next picture has five dots.
Other things swap back and forth. Follow the shading: white, grey, white, grey. It takes turns. So the next picture is white.
Here's a harder one, where two things change. First, follow the arrow. It makes a quarter turn clockwise each time, so next it points left. Now follow the shading. It takes turns, so next it's white. Picture B is white, with an arrow pointing left.
Let's try one together. Which picture goes in the gap? Here's a tip: follow the size. Say it out loud!
The answer is picture B! The size goes small, medium, large, then starts again, so the next one is medium.
Here's a common mistake. Following one thing, and then stopping. A wrong choice is often right about the arrow, but wrong about the shading. So check everything that changes before you choose.
Your turn! Which picture goes in the gap? Pick the right card. You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! There's one more dot each time, so the gap has five dots. The shading takes turns, so the gap is grey. The answer is picture C!
Quick review. Follow one thing at a time. Some things change by a step, and some swap back and forth. Check everything that changes. Then pick the choice that fits it all. See you next time!
