In this lesson
- Times four: double, then double again.
- Times eight: double three times.
- Times six: work out times three, then double it.
Your turn
What is four times nine?
Show the answer
Double nine is eighteen. Double eighteen is thirty-six. Four times nine is thirty-six!
The common mistake
Here's a question that catches lots of people. What is eight times six? Some people double only twice: six, twelve, twenty-four. But doubling twice is only times four! Eight needs three doublings: six, twelve, twenty-four, forty-eight.
Try it at home
Pick a number and keep doubling it out loud: 3, 6, 12, 24... Which times tables did you just say?

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Maths! What is eight times seven? If you know your twos, you can work it out, just by doubling!
Four is double two. So to times by four, times by two, then double it. Four times seven: two sevens are fourteen, and double fourteen is twenty-eight.
Why does doubling work? Four rows of seven are two rows of seven, and two more rows of seven. That's the same amount twice: double!
Eight is double four. So to times by eight, double three times! Seven, fourteen, twenty-eight, fifty-six. Eight times seven is fifty-six.
The six times table is double the threes. Three times seven is twenty-one. Double twenty-one is forty-two. So six times seven is forty-two.
Let's try one together. What is six times eight? Start with three times eight, then double it. Say it out loud!
Three times eight is twenty-four. Double twenty-four is forty-eight. Six times eight is forty-eight!
