In this lesson
- Nines: ten lots, take away one lot.
- Elevens: repeat the digit, up to nine.
- Twelves: ten lots, plus two lots.
- And sevens: you already know almost all of them!
Your turn
What is nine times eight?
Show the answer
Ten eights are eighty. Take away one eight: seventy-two. Nine times eight is seventy-two!
The common mistake
Here's a question that catches lots of people. What is eleven times twelve? Some people repeat the digits, and say one thousand, two hundred and twelve. But the repeating trick only works up to nine! Eleven times twelve is ten twelves, plus one twelve: a hundred and thirty-two.
Try it at home
Try the nines finger trick together for 9 × 1 to 9 × 10.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Maths! Sevens, nines, elevens and twelves are the trickiest times tables. But each one has a secret. Let's find them!
Nine is one less than ten. So nine times seven is ten sevens, take away one seven. Seventy take away seven is sixty-three.
Here's a trick with your fingers. Hold up all ten fingers. For nine times seven, fold down the seventh finger. There are six fingers on the left: that's sixty. And three on the right: that's three. Sixty-three!
Elevens are easy up to nine: just repeat the digit. Eleven times four is forty-four. Eleven times seven is seventy-seven. After nine, think of ten lots, plus one more lot: eleven times twelve is a hundred and twenty, plus twelve, which is a hundred and thirty-two.
Twelve is ten plus two. So twelve times seven is ten sevens, plus two sevens. Seventy plus fourteen is eighty-four.
And the sevens? Here's the secret: you already know most of them! Seven times two is two times seven, from the twos. Seven times five is five times seven, from the fives. In fact, the only one you don't know from another table is seven times seven: forty-nine.
Let's try one together. What is twelve times six? Think: ten sixes, plus two sixes. Say it out loud!
Ten sixes are sixty. Two sixes are twelve. Sixty plus twelve is seventy-two!
