Practise
Ten new questions every time. Answer them all, then check: you get your score, and the working for anything you missed.
In this lesson
- The twos are all even: they end in two, four, six, eight or nought.
- The tens end in nought.
- And the fives end in five or nought, and five times a number is half of ten times it.
Your turn
Which number is in the five times table?
Show the answer
Numbers in the five times table end in five or nought. Forty-five ends in five. Five times nine is forty-five!
The common mistake
Here's a question that catches lots of people. What is five times four? Some people think every five fact ends in five, and say twenty-five. But count in fives: five, ten, fifteen, twenty. Five times four is twenty.
Try it at home
Print or draw a hundred square and colour in the 2s, 5s and 10s. What patterns appear?

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Maths! Today we'll learn three times tables at once: two, five and ten. Each one has a pattern that makes it easy!
Here's a hundred square: the numbers from one to a hundred, in rows of ten. Watch what happens when we colour in a times table.
Count in twos: two, four, six, eight, ten, and keep going. The twos make stripes! They're the numbers ending in two, four, six, eight and nought. So every number in the two times table is even.
Now count in tens: ten, twenty, thirty, all the way to a hundred. They're all in the last column. So every number in the ten times table ends in nought. Seven tens are seventy.
Now count in fives: five, ten, fifteen, twenty, and keep going. The fives make two columns: the fifth one, and the last one. So they end in five or nought, taking turns.
Here's a trick for fives. Five is half of ten. So five times six is half of ten times six. Ten times six is sixty, and half of sixty is thirty. So five times six is thirty!
Let's try one together. What is five times eight? Use the trick: half of ten times eight. Say it out loud!
Ten times eight is eighty. Half of eighty is forty. So five times eight is forty!
Here's a question that catches lots of people. What is five times four? Some people think every five fact ends in five, and say twenty-five. But count in fives: five, ten, fifteen, twenty. Five times four is twenty.
Your turn! Which number is in the five times table? Pick the right card. You've got fifteen seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! Numbers in the five times table end in five or nought. Forty-five ends in five. Five times nine is forty-five!
Quick review. The twos are all even: they end in two, four, six, eight or nought. The tens end in nought. And the fives end in five or nought, and five times a number is half of ten times it. See you next time!
