11+Chapter 2 · Lesson 4

In this lesson

Your turn

Pot, rope, tooth. Wind, brush, lamp. Which new word can you make?

Show the answer

Toothbrush! Tooth from the first group, and brush from the second.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Light, door, frog. Ring, sun, bell. Lots of people spot sunlight. But sun is in the second group, so it can't come first. The answer is doorbell.

Try it at home

Compound word ping-pong: one person says a word (sun, rain, foot), the other adds a word to make a compound (sunflower, rainbow, football). Then make your own two groups of three with only one answer.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! Here are two groups of three words. Take one word from the first group and one from the second, to make a new word. Rain, glass, dog. Sand, bath, bow. Rain and bow make rainbow!

Here's the rule. The word from the first group always comes first. And the two parts join to make one real word, with no space.

Let's see how to solve one. Cup, moon, boat. Car, toe, board. Take the first word, cup, and try it with each word in the second group. Cup with car, or cup with toe, makes nothing. But cup with board makes cupboard! That's the answer.

Here's a quick tip. You don't have to try all nine pairs in order. Start with the pair that sounds most likely, like a word you use every day. Then check the parts are in the right order.

Let's try one together. Key, shoe, frog. Hole, tea, ring. Which new word can you make? Say it out loud!

Keyhole! Key from the first group, then hole from the second. Well done if you said keyhole!

Here's a common mistake. Light, door, frog. Ring, sun, bell. Lots of people spot sunlight. But sun is in the second group, so it can't come first. The answer is doorbell.

Your turn! Pot, rope, tooth. Wind, brush, lamp. Which new word can you make? You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! Toothbrush! Tooth from the first group, and brush from the second.

Quick review. Take one word from each group. The first group's word comes first. Join them into one real word. See you next time!
