Move one letter

11+Chapter 2 · Lesson 3

In this lesson

Your turn

Wheat and ink. Which letter moves?

Show the answer

W! Wheat becomes heat, and ink becomes wink.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Bread and tea. Take out the B, and bread becomes read. That looks great, but B won't fit into tea. Both words have to work. Move the R instead: bead and tear.

Try it at home

Letter swap race: one person writes two short words where one letter can jump across (spin and hut), the other finds it. Then swap roles and make your own.

Read the whole lesson

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! Here are two words: spin and hut. Take one letter out of the first word, and put it into the second word. Both must still be real words. Take the S out of spin, and it becomes pin. Put the S into hut, and you get shut!

Here's the rule. You move just one letter. The other letters don't change, and they stay in the same order. And at the end, both words must be real words.

Let's see how to solve one. Crow and pot. First, take out each letter of crow, one at a time. Take out the C, and you get row. Take out the R, and you get cow. The other letters don't leave a word. Now try to fit C, or R, into pot. C doesn't fit anywhere. But R makes port! So the answer is R.

Let's try one together. Blend and cap. Which letter moves? Say it out loud!

L! Take the L out of blend, and you get bend. Put it into cap, and you get clap. Well done if you said L!

Here's a common mistake. Bread and tea. Take out the B, and bread becomes read. That looks great, but B won't fit into tea. Both words have to work. Move the R instead: bead and tear.

Your turn! Wheat and ink. Which letter moves? Pick the right card. You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! W! Wheat becomes heat, and ink becomes wink.

Quick review. Move one letter from the first word into the second. The other letters stay in order. Try each letter, and check that both words work. See you next time!
