Letter codes

11+Chapter 1 · Lesson 3

In this lesson

Your turn

If BED is written CFE, how is PEN written?

Show the answer

Each letter moves one along: P to Q, E to F, and N to O. QFO!

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. If HAT is written JCV, how is ZOO written? Some people get stuck at Z. But the alphabet goes round, so Z plus two is B. And ZOO is written BQQ.

Try it at home

Write each other secret messages in a +1 or +2 code. Swap them and decode by moving each letter back. Who can crack one without being told the rule?

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! In eleven plus tests, words are often written in code. If CAT is written DBU, how would you write DOG? Let's find out!

Line each letter up with its code letter. C becomes D, A becomes B, and T becomes U. Every letter moves one place along. That's the rule!

Now use the same rule on the new word. D moves one place, to E. O moves to P. And G moves to H. So DOG is written EPH.

Sometimes you're given the code, and asked for the word. Then go the other way. If the rule is move forward two, decoding means move back two. The code is JGNNQ. Move each letter back two, and you get HELLO!

Let's try one together. If SUN is written TVO, how is MAP written? Say it out loud!

NBQ! Each letter moves one place along: M to N, A to B, and P to Q. Well done if you said N, B, Q!

Here's a common mistake. If HAT is written JCV, how is ZOO written? Some people get stuck at Z. But the alphabet goes round, so Z plus two is B. And ZOO is written BQQ.

Your turn! If BED is written CFE, how is PEN written? Pick the right card. You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! Each letter moves one along: P to Q, E to F, and N to O. QFO!

Quick review. Line up each letter with its code letter, and find the rule. Use the same rule on the new word. And to decode, go the other way. See you next time!
