Letter sequences

11+Chapter 1 · Lesson 2

In this lesson

Your turn

What comes next: D, H, L, P?

Show the answer

Each step is four, and P plus four is T!

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. What comes next: W, Y? Some people say there's nothing after Z. But the alphabet wraps round, and after Z comes A. So Y plus two is A!

Try it at home

Make up letter sequences for each other on scrap paper (step 2, step 3, or pairs like AB, CD). Check each other's with the alphabet numbers written underneath.

Read the whole lesson

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! In eleven plus tests, you'll see letter sequences like this one. What comes next? Let's crack them!

Write the alphabet numbers under the letters. C is three, F is six, I is nine, and L is twelve. Each step goes up by three. So next is fifteen, and that's O!

Some sequences use pairs of letters, like AB, CD, EF. Follow the first letters on their own, and the second letters on their own. A, C, E goes up by two. B, D, F goes up by two as well. So next is GH.

Sometimes a sequence runs past Z. Then it carries on from A, like going round a clock. X, Z, B, D: each step is two. After Z comes A, then B.

Let's try one together. What comes next: B, E, H, K? Say it out loud!

N! Each step goes up by three. K is eleven, and eleven plus three is fourteen, which is N. Well done if you said N!

Here's a common mistake. What comes next: W, Y? Some people say there's nothing after Z. But the alphabet wraps round, and after Z comes A. So Y plus two is A!

Your turn! What comes next: D, H, L, P? Pick the right card. You've got eight seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! Each step is four, and P plus four is T!

Quick review. Write the numbers under the letters, and find the step. For pairs, follow each letter on its own. And after Z, go back to A. See you next time!
