Ages 7–9Chapter 3 · Lesson 5

Your turn

The desert stretched for miles in every direction. Which word describes it?

Show the answer

Vast! It was huge, and stretched a long way.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Mixing up scarce and scared. Water was scared in the desert. But water can't be frightened! It was hard to find, so it was scarce, with a C.

Try it at home

Size and amount spotting: find something minute, something vast, something scarce and something abundant in the house or garden.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! Big, small, lots and not much are useful words. But these words are much more exact.

First, words for size. This word is spelt like a minute on a clock, but here it's said my newt, and it means extremely small. Compact means small, and fitting neatly into a space. Immense means extremely large. And vast means huge, and stretching a long way.

Now words for amount. Scarce means hard to find, because there isn't much. Meagre means much too small an amount. Ample means more than enough. And abundant means in large amounts, plentiful.

Let's try one together. There was so much fruit on the trees that we couldn't pick it all. Was the fruit scarce, or abundant? Say it out loud!

Abundant! There was plenty of fruit, more than we could pick. Well done if you said abundant!

Here's a common mistake. Mixing up scarce and scared. Water was scared in the desert. But water can't be frightened! It was hard to find, so it was scarce, with a C.

Your turn! The desert stretched for miles in every direction. Which word describes it? Pick the right card. You've got eight seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! Vast! It was huge, and stretched a long way.

Quick review. The tiny word, spelt like a minute, compact, immense and vast are about size. Scarce, meagre, ample and abundant are about amount. And scarce, with a C, is not the same as scared. See you next time!
