Muddy! Rain all night makes a field muddy, not dusty or sunny.
The common mistake
Here's a common mistake. Choosing before you reach the end of the sentence. I put the blank in my pocket. A coin? A key? Chocolate? They all fit so far. But the sentence goes on: but later it had melted. Only chocolate melts. Always read to the full stop.
Try it at home
Say a sentence with one word left out, and let your child offer three words that could fit. Then choose the best one together, and say why.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! Here's a sentence with a word missing. It was so cold that we needed our coats. Choosing the missing word is called a cloze question.
Here's how to do it. First, read the whole sentence, and say blank at the gap. It was so blank that we needed our coats. Next, try each word in the gap. It was so hot? No, you don't need a coat when it's hot. It was so loud? A coat doesn't help with noise. It was so cold. Yes, that makes sense.
Sometimes all the words mean the same thing, and only one fits the grammar. Yesterday she blank the ball over the fence. The word yesterday tells you it already happened. She throw? She thrown? She threw! Threw is the one that works.
Let's try one together. The baby was asleep, so we spoke blank. Loudly, quietly or angrily? Say it out loud!
Quietly! You speak quietly when a baby is asleep.
Here's a common mistake. Choosing before you reach the end of the sentence. I put the blank in my pocket. A coin? A key? Chocolate? They all fit so far. But the sentence goes on: but later it had melted. Only chocolate melts. Always read to the full stop.
Your turn! Because it had rained all night, the field was blank. Which word fits best? Pick the right card. You've got eight seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! Muddy! Rain all night makes a field muddy, not dusty or sunny.
Quick review. Read the whole sentence, and say blank at the gap. Try each word in the gap. Read to the full stop before you choose. See you next time!
