How to read the passage

11+Chapter 1 · Lesson 1

In this lesson

Your turn

Read the paragraph, then choose the label that fits it best.

Show the answer

How owls hunt! Every sentence is about how an owl finds and catches its food.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Choosing a label from just one small detail. The paragraph mentions a lantern, but only once. A good label fits the whole paragraph, not one sentence.

Try it at home

Read a page together, then ask your child to give it a title of two or three words. Does the title fit the whole page, or only one sentence?

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! In a reading test, it's tempting to rush straight to the questions. But a few minutes of good reading first saves time later. Here's how to read a passage.

First, read the whole passage from start to finish. Don't stop at a hard word. Just keep going, and follow the story. You don't need to remember every detail, because the passage stays in front of you.

Now give each paragraph a label of two or three words. The first paragraph is about how bees find flowers. So write: finding flowers. The second paragraph is about what they carry home. So write: carrying pollen. Now you have a map of the passage.

Here's why the map helps. Where would you look to find out what bees carry? You don't need to read it all again. Your label says: paragraph two.

Let's try one together. Read this paragraph. Which label fits it best? Say it out loud!

A storm at sea! Every sentence is about the storm, so that's the label.

Here's a common mistake. Choosing a label from just one small detail. The paragraph mentions a lantern, but only once. A good label fits the whole paragraph, not one sentence.

Your turn! Read the paragraph, then choose the label that fits it best. Pick the right card. You've got fifteen seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! How owls hunt! Every sentence is about how an owl finds and catches its food.

Quick review. Read the whole passage first, and don't stop at hard words. Give each paragraph a short label. Use your labels to find answers quickly. See you next time!
