In this lesson
- A quarter turn is twelve to three on a clock.
- Clockwise moves the top to the right.
- Anticlockwise moves the top to the left.
Your turn
This arrow points right, and makes a quarter turn clockwise. Where does it point now?
Show the answer
Down! On a clock, three o'clock turns on to six o'clock, and that's down.
The common mistake
Here's a common mistake. Mixing up the two directions. If you're stuck, picture the hands on a clock. They go from the top, over to the right. That's clockwise.
Try it at home
Hold a toy or a pencil pointing up, and call out clockwise or anticlockwise. Your child turns it a quarter turn each time.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! Many puzzles turn a shape round. Today we'll learn the turn you'll see most: the quarter turn.
Think of a clock. When the hand moves from twelve to three, that's a quarter of the way round. Going the same way as the hands is called clockwise. Going the other way is called anticlockwise.
Now let's turn a shape. This flag makes a quarter turn clockwise. The top moves to the right. The whole shape turns together, so nothing changes except its direction.
Now a quarter turn anticlockwise. This time the top moves to the left. Here's a tip: follow just one part of the shape, like the tip of the flag.
Let's try one together. This arrow points up. It makes a quarter turn anticlockwise. Where does it point now? Say it out loud!
To the left! Going against the clock, the top moves to the left.
Here's a common mistake. Mixing up the two directions. If you're stuck, picture the hands on a clock. They go from the top, over to the right. That's clockwise.
Your turn! This arrow points right, and makes a quarter turn clockwise. Where does it point now? Pick the right card. You've got eight seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! Down! On a clock, three o'clock turns on to six o'clock, and that's down.
Quick review. A quarter turn is twelve to three on a clock. Clockwise moves the top to the right. Anticlockwise moves the top to the left. See you next time!
