Rule out wrong answers

11+Chapter 4 · Lesson 1

In this lesson

Your turn

Which picture goes in the gap?

Show the answer

The answer is picture D! The size goes small, medium, large, so the gap is large. And the shape stays a hexagon.

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Trying to check everything about every picture. That takes too long. Check one feature across all the choices, and then the next.

Try it at home

When you do a picture puzzle, say one feature out loud, and cross out what doesn't fit, before you look for the answer.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! In a picture test, you don't always need the whole rule at once. You can rule out wrong answers, one feature at a time.

Here's how. Pick one feature that's easy to check. Cross out every choice that doesn't fit. Then pick another feature, and do it again.

Let's try it. First, the dots. There's one more each time, so the gap has four. That rules out picture A and picture D. Now the shading. It takes turns, so the gap is white. That rules out picture C. Only picture B is left.

What if you run out of time? Rule out what you can, then choose from what's left. Check the instructions on your paper. If wrong answers don't lose marks, never leave a blank.

Let's try one together. Which picture goes in the gap? Here's a tip: start with the arrow. Say it out loud!

The answer is picture C! The arrow rules out picture A and picture B. The shading rules out picture D.
