Ten new questions every time. Answer them all, then check: you get your score, and the working for anything you missed.
In this lesson
- Open one fold at a time, starting with the last.
- Each fold works like a mirror.
- Every hole gets a partner.
- So the number of holes doubles each time.
Your turn
Which picture shows it opened out?
Show the answer
The answer is picture C! The fold line is across the middle, so the hole is mirrored from top to bottom.
The common mistake
Here's a common mistake. Forgetting that the new hole is mirrored. It isn't just moved along by the same amount. It's the same distance from the fold, on the other side.
Try it at home
Fold a sheet of paper, punch a hole, and guess where the holes will be before you open it.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Non-verbal Reasoning! A piece of paper is folded, and a hole is punched through it. When you open it out, where are the holes?
Here's the rule. Open one fold at a time, starting with the last fold. Each time you open a fold, every hole gets a partner on the other side of the fold. So one hole becomes two.
Let's do one. This paper is folded in half, along the dotted line. A hole is punched through both layers. Now open it out. The fold line works like a mirror, so the holes are the same distance from it.
Here's a paper folded twice. First, open the last fold. One hole becomes two. Then open the first fold. Two holes become four.
Let's try one together. Which picture shows it opened out? Here's a tip: think of the fold line as a mirror. Say it out loud!
The answer is picture B! The two holes are mirror images, across the fold.
Here's a common mistake. Forgetting that the new hole is mirrored. It isn't just moved along by the same amount. It's the same distance from the fold, on the other side.
Your turn! Which picture shows it opened out? Pick the right card. You've got ten seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! The answer is picture C! The fold line is across the middle, so the hole is mirrored from top to bottom.
Quick review. Open one fold at a time, starting with the last. Each fold works like a mirror. Every hole gets a partner. So the number of holes doubles each time. See you next time!
