Ten new questions every time. Answer them all, then check: you get your score, and the working for anything you missed.
In this lesson
- A preposition links a noun to the rest of the sentence.
- Lots of them tell us where: under, behind, on and in.
- Some tell us when: before, after and during.
Your turn
Which word is the preposition? The fox ran across the field.
Show the answer
Across is the preposition. It tells us where the fox ran.
The common mistake
Here's a common mistake. Lots of people think prepositions only tell you where. But some tell you when. In this sentence, during is a preposition too.
Try it at home
Hide and tell: hide a toy, then give clues using prepositions only (under, behind, beside, between). Swap roles, and add a when clue too (before tea, after bath).

Some prepositions tell us when something happens. We play after school. Wash your hands before lunch. I fell asleep during the film.
Let's try one together. Which word is the preposition? The cat hid behind the sofa. Say it out loud!
