Adverbs

Ages 7–9Chapter 1 · Lesson 4

In this lesson

Your turn

Which word is an adverb?

Show the answer

Gently is an adverb: it tells you how something is done, like stroke the cat gently!

The common mistake

Here's a common mistake. Is friendly an adverb? Some people think so, because it ends in ly. But friendly describes a noun, like a friendly dog. So it's an adjective. Not every word ending in ly is an adverb!

Try it at home

Adverb charades: one person acts out a verb in the manner of an adverb (walk sleepily, eat noisily); the others guess the adverb.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora English! The tortoise walked. The tortoise walked slowly! The word slowly is an adverb.

An adverb tells you more about a verb. It can tell you how something happens. She sang loudly. He ran quickly.

An adverb can also tell you when, or where. We'll go soon. Come here. I saw it yesterday.

Lots of adverbs are made by adding ly to an adjective. Quick becomes quickly. Slow becomes slowly. Careful becomes carefully.

Let's try one together. Find the adverb. The cat crept quietly. Say it out loud!

Quietly! It tells you how the cat crept. Well done if you said quietly!

Here's a common mistake. Is friendly an adverb? Some people think so, because it ends in ly. But friendly describes a noun, like a friendly dog. So it's an adjective. Not every word ending in ly is an adverb!

Your turn! Which word is an adverb? Pick the right card. You've got eight seconds, or pause the video. Go!

Time's up! Gently is an adverb: it tells you how something is done, like stroke the cat gently!

Quick review. An adverb tells you more about a verb. It can say how, when or where. Lots of adverbs end in ly, but not every word ending in ly is an adverb. See you next time!
