Practise
Ten new questions every time. Answer them all, then check: you get your score, and the working for anything you missed.
In this lesson
- One place after the point is tenths.
- Two places after the point is hundredths.
- A penny is one hundredth of a pound, and a centimetre is one hundredth of a metre.
- And always check which place a digit is in!
Your turn
Which one is zero point zero nine?
Show the answer
The nine is two places after the point, in the hundredths place. So zero point zero nine is nine hundredths!
The common mistake
Here's a question that catches lots of people. Is zero point zero seven the same as seven tenths? Some people say yes, because they see a seven. But the seven is two places after the point: it's seven hundredths, ten times smaller!
Try it at home
Empty a purse or money jar. Write each amount as pounds and pence, like £2.45, and say which coins are tenths.

Hello, and welcome to Myriora Maths! What do the digits after the point mean, in two pounds forty-five? Digits after the point are worth less than one: tenths and hundredths. Let's see them, with a bar, money and a ruler!
Cut one whole into ten equal parts. Each part is one tenth. We can write one tenth as zero point one. Three parts are three tenths: zero point three.
Now cut the whole into a hundred equal parts. Each tiny part is one hundredth: zero point zero one. Seven hundredths is zero point zero seven. The seven is two places after the point.
Zero point three seven has three tenths and seven hundredths. On the hundred square, that's three columns, and seven more squares: thirty-seven hundredths!
Money works the same way. A pound is a hundred pennies, so one penny is one hundredth of a pound. Two pounds forty-five is two pounds, four ten-pence coins, and five pennies. The four is in the tenths place, and the five is in the hundredths place.
And lengths. A metre is a hundred centimetres. So one point two five metres is one metre and twenty-five centimetres.
Let's try one together. Zero point six: how many tenths is that? Say it out loud!
Six tenths! The six is one place after the point, in the tenths place.
Here's a question that catches lots of people. Is zero point zero seven the same as seven tenths? Some people say yes, because they see a seven. But the seven is two places after the point: it's seven hundredths, ten times smaller!
Your turn! Which one is zero point zero nine? Pick the right card. You've got twenty seconds, or pause the video. Go!
Time's up! The nine is two places after the point, in the hundredths place. So zero point zero nine is nine hundredths!
Quick review. One place after the point is tenths. Two places after the point is hundredths. A penny is one hundredth of a pound, and a centimetre is one hundredth of a metre. And always check which place a digit is in! See you next time!
